Two more needless tragedies happened early on Super Bowl Sunday, including 26-year-old Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson.
The other victim was 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, of Avon, Indiana. Police say they were killed when a suspected drunk driver struck them as they stood outside their car along Interstate 70 on Indianapolis’ west side.
It is believed that Monroe was a ride-sharing operator who was transporting Jackson when Jackson became ill. Monroe pulled over to the emergency shoulder of the highway and got out to help Jackson when both were struck by a pickup truck that also hit Monroe’s car.
The driver of the pick-up, Alex Cabrera Gonsales, 37, was booked at Marion County Jail. Gonsales attempted to flee on foot but was quickly captured, according to State Police. He was believed to be intoxicated and driving without a license.
The Colts said in a statement that “(We) admired Jackson’s outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality. He was well-respected among all with whom he crossed paths, and he will be greatly missed in our locker room and throughout our entire organization. We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both men during this difficult time.”
