How does your hospital rate?

Before you enter the hospital for most any type of procedure, you might want to check the list to see how the facility rates compared to others. To add an early disclaimer here, there are many fine hospitals in our region and throughout Indiana and Illinois. Yet, some of them might be questionable.

Twice a year a group called the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades (formerly known as Hospital Safety Scores) are assigned to more than 2,600 general acute-care hospitals across the nation. For many, Leapfrog Safety Grade is becoming the gold standard measure of patient safety as cited in several national media outlets.

So where does Indiana rank? About one-third of 59 Indiana acute care facilities surveyed by the LeapFrog Group received A grades in a report released November 2017. Overall, Indiana ranks in the middle of the country for its hospitals’ safety grades. Out of 50 states, Indiana comes in at 23rd. Illinois was comparable with a rank of 26th.

While we won’t name them here, it is concerning that several hospitals received a grade of D or even F. “The report is designed to provide patients with information on how well hospitals are able to protect patients from harm and error in the hospital,” says a Leapfrog spokesperson.

The Indiana State Department of Health won’t comment on reports from outside groups. However, the state agency has a full consumer report of all the Indiana hospitals available on its website.

You can also check grades for individual hospitals anywhere in the country here.

Johns Hopkins researchers report hospital errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States. We have reported on this shocking fact in an earlier report on this page.
