What Is Mirena?
Mirena is a brand name for a T-shaped, plastic intrauterine device (IUD) produced by Bayer to be used as a contraceptive. Mirena releases a synthetic version of progestin into the uterus that prevents conception. The progestin-type hormone thins the uterine lining, which keeps sperm cells from being able to reach and fertilize eggs. It also thickens cervical mucus, which can stop sperm from entering the uterus in the first place. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Mirena as a contraceptive device for women who had at least one child and for women with excessive menstrual bleeding. Patients could use it for up to five years. Unfortunately, as patients began using Mirena IUDs for birth control, some experienced situations where the device migrated to other areas of the uterus, became embedded in the uterine wall or even perforated (punctured) the uterus. NuvaRing is a contraceptive device that is vaginally inserted and contains a hormone dosage to prevent pregnancy. Some women may favor NuvaRing over birth control pills because they only need to insert it once a month, and it purportedly has less adverse side effects than the pill. The device has minor side effects that are annoying but treatable, such as headaches, vaginitis, vaginal discharge and nausea. However, the main concern is the risk NuvaRing poses for developing blood clots. Blood clots can lead to strokes, heart attacks, deep vein blood clots, pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs that obstruct breathing) and also death. Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in deep veins) often occurs in the legs. Women have a tendency to develop these clots when inactive or sitting extensively. NuvaRing manufacturer Organon (a Dutch company that merged with Merck & Co.) marketed NuvaRing promoting its low risk. However, the estrogen and progesterone released into the bloodstream have led to serious problems. NuvaRing manufacturers failed to warn consumers and physicians and failed to realistically describe the life-threatening and actual adverse effects.
