A new survey has found that most marijuana users think it’s okay to drive high, according to a September (2019) survey from PSB Research, Civilized Media, BCW and Buzz Feed News.
It is safe to say that most would agree that driving while under the influence of alcohol is unsafe and dangerous. Alcohol is responsible for many serious accidents and fatalities, whether they are caused by the driver of a big truck or a young driver of the family car.
Now, marijuana’s effects on driving skills, particularly when used by drivers involved in auto accidents, including fatal ones, is an emerging issue in traffic safety.
Recently, students at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus got the chance to see the dangers of driving while impaired and not just after having too much to drink.
Students got behind the wheel of an SUV that was in park but equipped with an Arrive Alive simulator meant to provide a glimpse of what driving high might look and feel like.
UNITE’s driving simulator shows the consequences of driving while drunk, distracted and/or under the influence of marijuana.
A spokesperson for UNITE said this new emphasis is in response to the growing number of states that have legalized marijuana, including Michigan, which recently signed off on recreational use. Marijuana is not legal in any form in Indiana.
The simulator allows people to “Experience the ramifications of driving under the influence while in a safe environment.” Participants have found it very eye-opening.
The simulator can also recreates a realistic virtual experience of the dangers of texting while driving.
Bottom line: There are an increasing number of accidents and fatalities caused by this new generation of intoxicants, especially among teens, but also by irresponsible operators of any type of motor vehicles.
