Doctor Leaves Patient Before Heart Surgery Complete

The year was 2012. Dr. Pervaiz Chaudhry performed heart surgery on 70-year old Silvino Perez at the Community Regional Medical Center in Downtown Fresno.

At last report, Perez remains in a coma. He never did wake up after the surgery.

Investigators say the surgeon, Dr. Pervaiz Chaudhry, left the operating room before making sure the patient’s chest was closed properly, leaving the job to someone else.

Dr. Caudhry repeatedly said the report was false saying, “I completed the surgery. I was in the operating room. Everything was done. Chest was closed.”

Yet, a hospital employee who became a “whistle blower,” said otherwise. James Robillard first tipped investigators off anonymously, but later appeared at the trial and said, “I just could not see myself taking care of any more patients who were being harmed like this without saying something.”

Attorneys in the medical malpractice trial against Dr. Chaudhry say Robillard’s testimony was critical in a jury awarding the family $55.6 million in general damages in early March. Jurors are still considering punitive damages against Dr. Chaudhry.

Unfortunately, Chaudhry is another example of a doctor who provided negligent treatment to a patient. There is also some evidence that this isn’t the first time he has been irresponsible in his practice.

Like in all professions, the vast majority of doctors are honest and responsible professionals who you can trust with your life. Unfortunately, some doctors choose to take short cuts, perform certain procedures without the proper education, training, and/or experience, and use equipment and devices that have been shown to be faulty or obsolete.
